Father Matthew Brady was born September 27, 1889 in Ireland. He was ordained a priest in 1914.
He belonged to the Wichita Diocese but took a medical leave of absence from 1925 to 1930 and ended up in Fruita. He was our pastor from 1926 until 1927 when he left the area.
According to Father Hickey's book, he promised the people of Palisade he would be there every week to celebrate the Mass if they purchased him a car. They did and from that time on, Mass was celebrated in Palisade every Sunday.
At first this story didn't make much sense, but according to the Denver Catholic Journal, Father Brady "had been in poor heath for a number of years with a heart ailment. He suffered a great deal, but bore it admirably." This explained the need for the car.
He died November 25, 1941 at the age of 52 in Iola, Kansas. Buried at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Gas, Allen County, Kansas.
