Born in Denver on March 8, 1886, Father Joseph D. Segourn spent his early years as a priest engaged as a professor of philosophy at St. Francis' College, Loreto, being honored by the doctorate in philosophy degree.
He transferred to the Diocese of Denver and was assigned to Sacred Heart Parish, Pueblo before coming to Fruita on June 5, 1932.
Described as "stern" but also very devoted to the youth of the Parish. He attended their meetings and gave them instruction and guidance.
He also liked joining in with the Pinochle Club that was conducted in the homes of Parishioners.
