Father Joseph Oldenburg, came to us from Madison, Nebraska. He was known to travel by train every two weeks to Palisade to say mass for the people at St. Anne's Mission. He also travelled to the Eastern areas of Utah performing baptizims, even though Utah was under the Diocese of Salt Lake.
According to Father Hickey in his book, "Catholics on the Western Front", during his three years in Fruita, Father Oldenburg administered 70 baptisms; an indication of the growth of the parish of St. Malachy.
According to the Denver Catholic Register, September 12 1918, a new parish was formed by Bishop Tihen in Northern Colorado and Father Oldenburg was transferred.
